Cannon has been involved in innovative projects supported by the European Commission, in the framework of the environment and climate protection actions.
The R&D team based in Caronno Pertusella (Varese) is composed of 15 engineers exclusively dedicated to the development of technologies related to polyurethane foaming, composite materials molding, molds, thermoforming and industrial automation.

Studying and testing of new technologies to be applied to future machines that will be put on the market
Testing campaigns in collaboration with the raw material producers to refine Cannon technologies using advanced materials to improve the quality of the finished product

The Life Cral Project
Brembo and Cannon Ergos launched LIFE CRAL to develop, create and validate an industrial pilot plant for semisolid casting of eco-compatible feedstock materials. LIFE CRAL will drastically cut emissions in aluminium (Al) production, eliminating any pollutants by substituting it with recycled Al and eco-magnesium (ECO-Mg) and completely avoid highly polluting gases.
Specifically for Al alloys, for the first time at industrial level and in automotive, a sustainable and innovative process is introduced by LIFE CRAL, enabling the re-use of recycled Al feedstock from municipal solid waste.
Brembo is the world leader in the design and manufacturing of high performance breaking systems and components for cars, motorbikes and commercial vehicles, as well as other components for racing.
In the project Brembo is responsible for project management, exploitation and dissemination activities and it is involved in the selection of sustainable and high-performing raw materials for automotive braking system cast components, installation, activation and validation of an innovative Pilot Semi-Solid Metal (SSM) line, fabrication of real industrial samples to be validated via bench-scale experiments and on-road tests and evaluation of the environmental impacts of the CRAL process from cradle to grave.
Cannon is the technical partner of the project, chosen for its expertise in light alloys vertical die-casting and its commitment to innovation and experimentation. Its role as associated beneficiary focuses on the engineering and the manufacturing part of the project. In particular, Cannon will be responsible for the design of an innovative Pilot Semi-solid metal (SSM) line, the installation, activation and validation of the Pilot SSM line and the evaluation of replicability and transferability of the Pilot SSM line in different regions and/or sectors.
The Life Cresim Project
The objective of the CRESIM project was to demonstrate an innovative pilot process, involving fast demoulding and high-pressure injection, spray and liquid laydown for the production of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites from recycled carbon fibre.
Cannon Ergos and Cannon Afros are partners in this project within the European funding program LIFE +.
